As the days pass and we become busier and busier, it seems that finding time to read becomes an afterthought. Many just give up on trying.
Consider the reasons you like to read. Is it to become more knowledgable on a certain subject? Do you read to relax and reduce stress? Does reading challenge your imagination or inspire you?
Studies have proven that there are many benefits to reading. There is a reason that kids are pushed to read and start reading at a young age. As adults we should work to continue that habit. It has just as many benefits as an adult.
If you struggle with what to read, maybe you need to browse Amazon’s best seller lists, or go walk around a Barnes & Noble to see what subjects and books grab your interest. Ask your friends who share similar interests what they’re reading.
Each year there are two books that I read;
These two books seem to teach or reinforce something each time I read them. So every year they are on my must read lists.
Outside of those two books, here are five very good books that I’ve read this year. If you find any of these interesting or helpful please let me know. If you recommend any good books I’d love to hear them.
The Splendid and the Vile By. Erik Larsen
One of the top books from 2020, this book tells such a great story. The story is about Winston Churchill and London during the blitz. It’s written so well that it seems like fiction. The way Erik Larsen tells this story you feel like you’re living during that moment in history. His writing take you on twists and turns right from the start, you don’t want to put the book down.
There is no shortage of books about Winston Churchill. His courage, leadership and perseverance during a time of what seemed like endless major decisions is fascinating. There is a reason why books keep getting written about him and why he is such a studied legend. This book goes to the top of that list.
Chase The Lion By. Mark Batterson
This book was recommended by Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott. This book played into his recruiting approach to getting current Bills GM Brandon BEane to join him in Buffalo.
The subtitle of this book says it all. “If Your Dream Doesn’t Scare You, It’s Too Small.” There is reason this book has been making the rounds within sports organizations and coaching rooms. It’s an excellent book for your mindset and what you want your future path to be.
Hell Yeah or No By. Derek Sivers
I wrote about this book back in April, as this is the book that I’ve gifted the most to others. This book left an everlasting impact on me. I started Spilled Coffee after reading this book. So you can thank this book for me even writing this.
This is a book that I have added to my list of books I read yearly. It’s such a quick and easy read. Even if you don’t have a lot of time to read, try reading this book over time. Reading it in short spurts works just fine. My past post about this book is below.
Psychology of Money By. Morgan Housel
Morgan Housel is currently the best writer on business and money. He takes the complicated parts of money and business down to an easily understood view for the reader. His writing relates to seasoned professionals or beginners with no knowledge on a subject.
In this book, Morgan takes the points about money and breaks them down to why we think and treat money the way we do. He then ties those into lessons on wealth, greed and happiness.
When someone asks me for a book on money, finances etc. this is the book I recommend. These 19 short stories he tells are relatable to anyone. Just an excellent place for people to start to get their mind right about wealth and money.
Shoe Dog By. Phil Knight
The story of Nike, one of the most iconic and recognizable brands in the word. This is a memoir written by Nike founder Phil Knight, a journey that is so fascinating to read.
All the ups and downs of the Nike story were never told before this book. It’s entertaining and engaging the entire way which makes this book a fast read. To hear and realize what Phil Knight endured to get Nike to where it is today is a great success story.
