Today was the day as a pet owner that you try to avoid and not ever think about. It was the day that we had to put our beloved Samoyed Prince to sleep.
He was with us and a part of our family for almost twelve years. He was the first “baby” that my wife and I had. We got him as a puppy before we were married or had kids.
In the early days, he was great at wearing my patience razor thin. From going for unapproved walks with the neighbors as they walked by, only for me to catch him down the road walking alongside them. To chasing him around and around the neighbor’s garden in the middle of the night trying to get him inside. He thought it was a game. I had very different thoughts. To the endless baths for getting into what he wasn’t supposed to.
He woke me at all hours of the night as a puppy. Created messes where he shouldn’t. Got into things he wasn’t supposed to. He pushed my limits. Tried my patience countless times
It turns out it was Prince who actually trained me for having kids. In those four years prior to having kids, he helped prepare me to be a better father for my kids.
Think of all we learn from pets. Patience, compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, not taking life too seriously and the shortness of life. A pet teaches you things you don’t even know about yourself. Pets help train us as much as we train them. We just don’t realize it.
Having a pet is hard. Knowing there is a time in the next 10-15 years where you’ll have to say goodbye isn’t easy. It sucks but life isn’t always easy.
Each time I look at the spot where Prince laid, I think of him. Anytime food is present my instinct is to watch out for him as he was always roaming and lurking for food, to now him not being there.
I miss him. The kids miss him. My wife misses him dearly. We’ll always miss him.
I wouldn’t trade the fun, pictures, videos and memories for anything. Yes, even the middle of the night round the garden chases. A pet just wants to show love and be loved. They want to play, eat and sleep. It’s a simple life. A life that we can really learn from.
It turns out he’s still training me. I’m still learning from him.
Oh Princer. Thank you and RIP buddy.

Auto insurance across the country has been on a fast climb higher. Courtesy of Paul Kedrosky, here are two good articles that shed light on why premiums are jumping so much. From the FT What’s going on with US car insurance? and Reuters Scratched EV battery? Your insurer may have to junk the whole car
For a second time I listened to Tim Ferriss’s interview with Rick Rubin on his podcast, Rick Rubin #649. I had talked about Rick Rubin’s new book The Creative Act in a past post. In this interview he explains more about the book and why he wrote it in a way where after you read a chapter or two you have to stop. He even gets into stories of some of the famous musical talents he’s worked with. He’s such an interesting person.
This tweet from Barry Ritholtz was just too good not to share.
