Some days just don’t go how you plan.
That’s how 2025 started off for me.
To start the week on Monday, I lost a new employee that we had just brought onto our team.
On Tuesday as I opened up my laptop it was dead. After having that MacBook for 10 years, it decided that was the day to die.
Then on Wednesday I woke up to a cold house as our heat was out on the coldest day of the new year. Here in Wisconsin that was a temperature of -5.
To say it was stressful and frustrating first three days of the week was an understatement. You then ask yourself, what can happen next?
Thankfully that was it. That was enough for one week.
But as it turned out, the employee leaving was a good thing for all parties involved. That worked out for the best.
After my laptop went out, Apple was able to get me a new MacBook in two days. I was still able to write what I needed for Spilled Coffee without missing a beat. I knew I would need new one soon anyway.
Our furnace it turned out had a sensor that had to be replaced and it was under warranty. They had it fixed within an hour of me calling them.
It all turned out to be minor inconveniences. But at the moment they felt like insurmountable problems. You get upset, stressed and get a sense of feeling overwhelmed.
This is what happens when our routines gets interrupted or we are faced with challenges.
We all know those days.
The days where it seems you can’t make any correct investments or trades. Where nothing at the company seems to be going how you want it. That big idea doesn’t come to fruition. You can’t get done what you want to get done. The examples could go on and on.
Our paths aren’t always smooth. There are twists and turns. Sometimes it feels like roadblocks or brick walls are in the way.
Life gives us bumps in the road all the time. Sometimes that brick wall gets in the way. That just makes us work harder.
Closed doors and dead ends lead to finding new ways. New paths. New curiosities. There is no stopping or getting discouraged. There are just other paths to take.
This is a visual that I’ve started to think about a lot.
Always remember how big that green tree is.

The Coffee Table ☕
Morgan Housel who always seems to write something that I relate to and come away nodding in agreement had another great read called, Minimum Levels of Stress Three great points from this article that stuck out to me. Stress is an innovator. People are problem solvers. Being angry can be an intoxicating feeling.
The WSJ wrote an article called America’s Bourbon Boom Is Over. Now the Hangover Is Here. I’m a collector of rare bourbon and occasionally will enjoy having a pour. It’s still extremely hard to find some of the rarest and best bourbons. So I was surprised to see how much the overall sales volumes are down.
