In today’s world, nobody wants to wait. Nobody has any patience. We’re used to instant gratification. We want instant results. The expectation is immediately.
The road in getting there should also be easy, right?
Well that’s the expectation. An expectation that’s wrong.
It’s actually more like this.
The reality is that it’s a slow grind. Bumps, potholes and hills along the way. So much in life is a slow grind.
Building & running a business
Investing
Raising kids & parenting
Dating & relationships
Training a dog
Growing a garden
Trying to lose weight.
Learning a new hobby
Learning a new job
Learning pretty much anything.
All of these and many other things, are slow grinds. They’re tough. They contain a lot of hard work, routine and determination.
Sure we complain about these things along the way. But isn’t that a part of the grind?
It’s in the waiting, training and learning. That time and work makes you better at what you’re trying to do.
Have a thirst for finding information and knowledge. Study, learn, experiment, read, watch and ask others to be the best parent, boss, investor, gardener, writer, spouse or anything else you want.
Have an unrelenting desire to do it to the best that you can. Why just go through the motions or be average? If you want to do something, really commit.
Not everything everyday is going to go your way. Everything worth doing will take time. It’s not meant to be easy.
There are days that it will suck, and you’ll ask yourself, “what the hell am I doing?” Days you’ll feel like quitting or giving up.
Things worth working for with lifelong payoffs or moments, don’t happen overnight, this week, next week, next month or even next year. Anything worth building, growing or learning takes time.
Today is not too late. Hindsight is always 20/20. If you’re looking back you will always say, I should have done this sooner or done this different.
Don’t do that to yourself.
Look forward. Don’t dwell on the past. Remain focused on what’s ahead.
It comes through a slow grind that eventually produces the success that blossoms. The fruits of that grind can last a lifetime.
After all, isn’t everything in life a slow grind? Embrace the grind.
I needed to be reminded of this today. Maybe you did as well.
The Coffee Table ☕
Darius Foroux had a good post called Wealth and Money Are Two Different Things. It’s such a great reminder about being focused and making sure the right things are at the forefront of our priorities. Wealth and money are different and I think many times we forget that.
We received some sad news this weekend from Jonathan Clements. I’ve referenced a number of posts from his site HumbleDollar over the years. He wrote a post informing every that he has cancer and only having 12 months left to live. The C Word It was a tough read as I’ve learned a tremendous amount from his writing. He wrote one of the best blog posts on writing that I’ve ever come across. Style Guide If you want tips on writing better, this is for you. If you write anything regarding finance or the stock market, it’s a must read. Thank you and the best of luck in your fight Jonathan.
